Are You Tired Of Paying Taxes and Getting Nothing In Return?
From the Desk of Wayne Strnad
Hello and thank you for stopping by my web site.
As you probably know, all of us pay taxes in one form or another. If you purchase something, you pay a tax. If you own property, you pay a tax. If you have a job, you pay several taxes although some of the money withheld will not be called a tax.
But have you ever wondered what you actually get in return for taxes that are levied?
If your community, like millions of other communities in America, does not have some simple things maintained for it, then it’s about time you take the initiative to do something to get some of your tax money back into the community and get your fair share of the pie, the American Dream, or whatever you want to call it.
But where do you start?
When I first tried to get funding for my community, I tried many things. I listened and believed what those in office were telling me because I thought I could trust them. That was my first mistake. That’s all they told me was what they thought I wanted to hear, namely, that the issue would be taken care of in time. They never did say how much time it would take, but said things like... just give it some time, or, we’ll need to look into it, or, I’ll get on it as soon as possible and get back to you.
It was all lies.
I later discovered that the “Give it some time.” excuse was a very long time that they and their predecessors have been telling people to the tune of 90 plus years. Yes, you read that right.

You are probably aware that if you read the entire document you downloaded for free, there was mention of a street that was in dire need of repair. If not, get your copy here by clicking on this link. In fact, the residents of this street tried for more than 90 years to get the street up to standards but the local alderman and other city officials just ignored them except that every 10 or so years, the city would dump a truckload of stones at the end of the block and expect residents to carry the stones to the front of their house and place the stones in the street. There were no curbs, sidewalks were of WPA vintage, sewers were falling apart and the lighting was more than 50 years old. Outrageous really but that's what happens when people do not know what to do to rectify the matter.
In this Guide, the Marmora Street Project, you will discover some of the following plus a lot more:

How to research information so that you can attain facts for your petition.

How to construct the petition.

How to circulate the petition properly.

How to bind it for submitting.

Determining to whom you must present the petition.

Let me go through some of these key features in detail.
Researching Information
It was once said that this is the age of information. That was back in the late 60's. I remember it so well because computers were finally making the scene. The first "computer" task that proved the usefulness of the computer dealt with an election. Votes were mechanically tabulated through something called a "device reader." Essentially it was a machine that looked for spaces that were punched out of a card - actually something referred to as a Hollerith card. The technology was relatively new at the time although the application of Hollerith cards was not. They were used primarily as a way to communicate with the "mainframe" computer. By the way, most computers of today could run circles around the mainframe of years gone by - yes, even the mainframes.
Today, the information/research cycle is completely different. From the comfort of your home, you can pretty much research any type of information you need through popular, and not so popular, search engines. Those are the starting points. Also, it is not uncommon to have large web sites with their own search facilities. An example would be a County Assessor or the Treasurer's Office, both of which maintain large volume's of data.
In this guide you'll discover some useful information as I take you one step at a time through the entire project. The guide includes the framework for:

Historical information for your petition defense.

Chronology of the building of properties.

Detailed report of taxes paid.

Composing a letter to your Mayor or Administrator.

How to involve the media.

Here is a snapshot of an article that appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times. Credit is hereby given and I extend my thanks to both the Sun-Times and Mary Mitchell, who came out to the area to see for herself what was going on (actually not going on at the time).
I believe that it was this article that appeared in the editorial section of the Sun-Times that forced the City of Chicago to finally take action to help the residents. It was shortly after this that work began on Marmora Street.

Constructing the Petition
Discover what the header, first paragraph, body, circulator and notary text should read. This particular petition took the form of a standard petition that would be used to get capital improvement money or prepare a referendum.
The Circulation Process
It's more than going out the door to talk to your neighbors. Here you'll see some of the things that you should do both before, during and after your days work in circulating the petition, plus others items you should concern yourself with.

Guidelines that help.

A word about practice.

Items to carry with you.

Listen closely.

Taking notes at the end of the day.

Who can sign your petition.

Where to start circulating.
Binding Your Petition
One of the most important aspects before you present your petition is to bind it. Here you'll learn about:

Numbering the pages after you order them a particular way.

How many copies you should make, minimally.

Punching the paper - it may not be where you think.

The Professional Look - adding the cover and backside.
Presenting Your Petition

Dishing out more balls until you get a strike.

Sample letter to the Mayor or Administrator.

Making the equivalent of a Press Kit for the media.

Inviting the newspapers to see for themself and talk to the residents.

One last thing before I end this. Many people have the belief that they cannot do something because they are only one and there’s nobody to help. Trust me, I am only one but managed to get more than $250,000.00 in improvements for my community. The Marmora Street Project is only one example that I put in a guide to help others do the same for their community. I was also instrumental in helping others to get more than $28,000,000 for a sewer project that happened in Chicago. You can to if you only try and don’t give up very easily. Believe you can do something and you will! Believe you can’t and you won’t!
Sincerely,
Wayne Strnad
Disclaimer: You, as an individual, will not make any money from your work, as is usual when you do community work. So why do it?
Not all things in life should be based on personal gain. Indirectly when your community gains, you gain in ways that may not become evident right away. It’s paramount to planting a seed. Some of the seeds you plant may grow but others may not. Only time will tell and allow you to reap the benefits of your work. What those benefits are remain to be seen.
